Literary Interruption

Literary Interruption does not mark an abandonment of the earlier structural inquiry. It names the interval in which that inquiry entered language.

Near the end of the 1990s, fragments of recollection began appearing online under the name Viktor Nel. The episodes gradually joined into The Star and the Sphere, described by its author as a “novel in fragments.” Its chapters operate as partially independent scenes, with their own incidents and internal resolutions, rather than as stages in a strictly sequential plot. The earliest known public version appeared online in 2000; the first printed edition followed in 2001. A jubilee edition, assembled from the surviving material and including unfinished texts, was published in 2022.

The novel is autobiographical without being a memoir. Its scientific institutions, military commissions, technical projects, administrative structures, and engineered absurdities derive from witnessed or experienced circumstances, but they are reorganized through satire, phantasmagoria, and fragmentation. The central figure is similarly dispersed among several characters, each carrying a different response to the surrounding system.

Within the novel, Kamensky names Level Zero: a condition of intense activity without meaningful displacement. Its inhabitants work, accumulate possessions, advance in rank, and change the outward conditions of life while remaining confined to the same inherited plane. They run in place, weigh themselves down with objects, and avoid lifting their eyes toward other dimensions.

Dimension Z—Измерение ЗЕТ—uses the third spatial coordinate in both its literal and extended senses. It names the possibility of leaving the accepted plane and recognizing a direction that the existing system does not contain. Sasha, who creates spatial geometric puzzles that can exist only in three dimensions, is the character who attempts to move from Level Zero toward Z. The movement is neither presented as easy nor declared complete. It begins with the recognition that Level Zero is insufficient.

The passage from Primordial Mechanisms to Literary Interruption is therefore continuous. The earlier mechanisms demonstrated that a single structure could contain spatial states concealed by its apparent identity. The Star and the Sphere transferred that question into human experience: what becomes possible when the given plane is no longer accepted as the whole of reality?

Deutilization would later return the inquiry to physical matter. It interrupts an object’s assigned utility so that capacities concealed by function can be encountered directly. Literary Interruption precedes Deutilization not only chronologically, but conceptually: the novel identifies the inherited plane; Deutilization begins the material act of leaving it.
