The core artifact of the HedgeCones corpus, first realized in 2013: new traffic cones, fixture fasteners, and an exercise ball released from their prescribed service through polyhedral assembly.
HedgeCone is the core artifact of the HedgeCones corpus within Deutilization. First realized in 2013, it places new manufactured objects into a polyhedral construction that interrupts their prescribed service while retaining their forms and physical capacities.
The documented material inventory comprises thirty new 18-inch traffic cones, sixty toilet-seat bolt-and-nut fasteners, and an exercise ball. The square cone bases occupy the square-face positions of a small rhombicosidodecahedral arrangement. Fasteners join the construction at its sixty vertex positions; the ball appears as a central sphere.
Its realization required assembly and reinforcement trials. July 2013 process records document bending, heat-related softening, and successful assembly. HedgeCone appeared at FIGMENT Boston on the Rose Kennedy Greenway in July 2013, received an award at the COOL exhibition at South Shore Art Center in November 2013, and appeared at TEDx Somerville in April 2014.
HedgeCone remains an operative artifact identity within HedgeCone Rad. The expanded 2014 work incorporates a complete authentic HedgeCone incarnation as its structural core and adds longer yellow cones. The same physical construction can embody both identities. Removal of the Rad additions can restore HedgeCone to independent presentation.
Deutilization concerns the interruption of assigned service. The cones no longer direct traffic, the fasteners no longer mount a toilet seat, and the ball no longer serves exercise. Their capacities for support and joining remain active.
The artifact identity, its authorized physical incarnation, and its situated installation are distinct. Additional incarnations or material alterations require artist authorization. Acquisition of a physical incarnation does not transfer the concept or a general reproduction right. Current condition, location, acquisition status, and overall dimensions require separate verification.
