MeconoMorph is an evolving generative system within Deutilization, initiated in 2013 from the structural possibilities of the standard business card. Cards are folded and joined into repeatable units called Mecons, which combine into expandable three-dimensional configurations. MeconoMorph persists through changing works, locations, contributors, materials, and physical incarnations rather than existing as one fixed sculpture.
MeconoMorph began in 2013 with an examination of the standard business card:
a familiar object whose dimensions, printed surface, and commercial purpose appear to determine what it is. Under Deutilization, that assigned function is suspended. The card is folded without cutting and joined with other cards, allowing its proportion and structural capacity to emerge independently of its original role as an instrument of identification and exchange.
The foundational repeatable unit is the Mecon.
Mecons can be connected, accumulated, removed, replaced, and rearranged to produce larger three-dimensional structures. Because the system is modular, no single configuration exhausts its possibilities. Growth changes not only the dimensions of a structure but also its geometry, density, spatial behavior, and relationship to its surroundings.
MeconoMorph is therefore more than one physical object.
It is a persistent generative system expressed through works, installations, participatory events, and distinct manifestations. Each manifestation occupies a particular place and time and may have its own configuration, scale, contributors, presentation history, and material condition. Individual cards and units may deteriorate or be replaced while the identity and governing logic of MeconoMorph continue.
Participation became an important part of this logic.
Business cards contributed by individuals and organizations enter a shared construction in which separate instruments of identity become components of a larger structural field. Authorship, accumulation, and transformation remain visible in the material itself: printed fragments persist across the surfaces even after the cards have ceased to perform their original function.
Within Arteanity, MeconoMorph is one of the most extensive realizations of Deutilization.
It demonstrates how an ordinary human-made object can be released from prescribed utility without being assigned another practical task.
The card is not recycled into a new consumer product and is not merely decorated or displayed. Its existing proportions and physical possibilities become the basis of an open system capable of repeated growth, transformation, disassembly, and renewed incarnation.
